I want to express my sorrow to the Sanfords for their loss. I remember playing with Walter at an early age when they lived to the east of Barnett's house. Walter and Holly were close in age and it has always been a pleasure to see them around town. Walter will be sorely missed.

I also was a classmate of Walter.I think since grade school. Walter was a loving caring guy, when we were younger noone really understood Walt but over the years we grew to love him and had great times. I was able to talk only a little with Walt at our 35th class reunion last year. May God hold you tight and be safe in his arms. You will be missed by many.Wish I could be there this week but to far away but will stop in when I am up in NY. Rest in Peace my friend God Bless Irene

The class of '76 is so terribly saddened by the passing of our classmate, Walter. He was such a kind and cheerful soul. It was wonderful to see him at last year's re-union, and to hear how content he was with his life. He told me he was so happy living in Southold with his family, and loved his job at San Simeon. This is a great loss and my heart goes out to his family.

It is with great sadness that I give my condolences to Walter's family. I was his classmate all through elementary and high school years, and have always enjoyed his quiet, thoughtful nature. His presence at our recent reunions was a reminder of what a great person he turned out to be and I am glad to have known him. He will be missed.

There are unexpected turns in our lives that we can never fully prepare for. For the Sanford family, the sudden loss of Walter can make the terrain difficult and hard to traverse. I once heard an elderly native american shaman tell a group that "every step is a prayer". It was a long time before I began to understand what he meant by that, but perhaps Walter's family can find some solace or strength in those words as they pass over this difficult ground. Walter was a good soul. We were classmates in middle and high school, but what I remember most about him is not what took place behind the walls of the classroom. My most vivid memories of him were out across the green fields of the school grounds. Walter ran like the wind and whether it was soccer during recess or laps during gym class, he was usually running far ahead and faster than most of us. Walter, you left this world much too soon, but I believe the wind is still at your back. Fair winds on your journey.

My condolences to Walter's family, his San Simeon family, and my fellow SHS classmates:
Walter was always a friendly face and a gentle soul.
A few years ago my Dad was in San Simeon for rehab after having a hip revision, and Walter's kindness, caring, and gentleness really helped make the experience a good one for my Dad, my family, and me.
Since October I have seen Walter at least twice a month in the IGA, where we shared stories of classmates, his perfect attendance at the Wednesday night summer concerts, and pictures of him wearing a kilt!
I will miss him.

From Capt. John T Holmberg (re the loss of Hans Horrevoets):
"I am standing upon the seashore.
A ship at my side spreads her white sails in the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength and I stand and watch her until at length she is only a ribbon of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.
Then someone at my side says,
"There! She is gone!'
"Gone where?
Gone from my sight
---that is all.
She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side,
and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of her destination.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her
and just at the moment when someone at my side says,
"There! She is gone!"
there are other voices ready to take up the glad shout,
"There! She comes!"
And that is dying.

The class of '76 has lost a great friend. Walter truly loved this class!
Walter has been a good friend and wrestling partner. His super enthusiastic way about everything was so comical at times. He'd always put you in a good mood.
God blessed us when he made Walter. I'll miss you old friend. See you on the other side.

Family & Friends, I'm sorry to hear of your loss as I was a classmate of Walter. He was by no means an outspoken person during our school years, but he is in a place where his words cannot only be heard but felt by those who loved him. Jamie Faucon

Long Time No See!!!Lindy, Rhys, Piper and I are loving our home more every day and I hate hainvg to leave for work as much as I do! The good news is that things have been going very well with enrollment almost at capacity and two students ranked in the top 5 in the world! One of my former students just won the X Games and is looking at purchasing some property in the area. The biggest concern is hainvg a structure with high enough ceilings where we could put an Olympic trampoline in to train on. I don't know if this could be a barn or a work shop, but anything that was covered with 20 + ceilings would be ideal. I imagine that there has to be something like this between Government Camp and Portland and you were the first person that came to mind. The actual living accommodations are secondary as he is an 18 year old professional athlete from Indiana, so he doesn't need anything fancy. I hope you are doing well and look forward to hearing from you. Thank you
